While Tides Guide You Back Home by Edwin Ushiro

I try not to wax poetic about art unless it strikes me in some deep, significant way. Above is something that did just that: a preview to a show that Edwin Ushiro is having at Project: Gallery in Culver City, California. This collection showcases his amazing work, and after reading about it I realized what makes it so intriguing.

After an adventurous day in Temecula, we took highway 78 to Oceanside. We enjoyed waves at Carlsbad, amazing appetizers at Le Papagayo in Leucadia, and quintessential California scenery along old highway 101. And towards the end of the journey we hit upon an awesome sight: the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We had heard about it previously, but our personal visions of it did not compare to what we were witnessing: bathed in perfect light, the perfect layout of tents and rides, humming along in harmony, festive and proud.

The shakiness of the picture above doesn't do it justice, but man, if heaven is a fair at the edge of the ocean, I better make sure I have tickets.

Now Leaving Bangalore

Bangalore02

After 10 days of unnameable street corners, crazy traffic, amazing people, and incredible food, it's now time to return to the good ol' clean US of A. Many more pictures of this chaotic and colorful city to come.

One travel note: As we're leaving Bangalore at 6:45AM, transfering at London Heathrow, and arriving in San Francisco at 4:40PM,
we're pretty much tracking the sun from sunrise to sunset, going halfway around the world. How cool is that: traveling with daylight on (approximately) the summer solstice.

Great place to watch the French Open for free: on a big screen in Paris with lots of tennis fans. This was after the beating that Nadal gave Federer to win his fourth French Open title.

Certainly not as good as the other coffee purveyor I listed, but Martha & Bros. still ranks pretty highly in my book.

The Triple Salad

A "fridge cleaner" or "garbage plate" made before my trip, from left to right: curry chicken salad with currants, red leaf salad with balsamic vinaigrette, black pepper, and shaved gruyere cheese, and fingerling potato salad tossed with lentil curry dip.

Goodbye, Florent

Florent

One of my favorite NY restaurants, an enduring combination of diner + french brasserie fare placed in an unassuming 24 hour spot in the meatpacking district, is closing on June 29.

It was a great place for brunch before going to see some cool art, as well as for late night fixings either post clubbing, or just to cure that general NYC insomnia after walking around a lot. The menus cater to everyone from truck drivers to hipsters: paté with cornichons, corned beef hash with eggs, grilled cheese sandwiches, organic granola, or amazing house salads.

Homages in the NY Times (make sure you see the audio slide show) and in NY Magazine wax poetic about Florent's place in history. The main reason for its closing was the sudden rise in the rent from about $6,000/month to $30,000 a month. And as sad as that is, founder Florent Morellet has accepted that the time is indeed over. He is spending each week of this month dedicated to the 5 stages of loss: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, for each one having a special party, going out with a bang instead of fading into obscurity.

Duartes

It's kind of off the grid, as evidenced by its rustic jukebox and frozen-in-time interior, and has great hospitality and tasty food, especially after a coastal drive. Find it here.

Batali, Paltrow, Bassols, and Bittman

I can't wait to see this. Two cooks I admire + two beautiful women, on the road in Spain enjoying great food. What else do you need?

Saturday Breakfast

Breakfast

2-egg omelet with gruyere cheese, mushrooms, and salsa; crisp bacon; dried mission figs; papaya; and, out of frame, a Café Bello americano.
