One of my favorite NY restaurants, an enduring combination of diner + french brasserie fare placed in an unassuming 24 hour spot in the meatpacking district, is closing on June 29.
It was a great place for brunch before going to see some cool art, as well as for late night fixings either post clubbing, or just to cure that general NYC insomnia after walking around a lot. The menus cater to everyone from truck drivers to hipsters: paté with cornichons, corned beef hash with eggs, grilled cheese sandwiches, organic granola, or amazing house salads.
Homages in the NY Times (make sure you see the audio slide show) and in NY Magazine wax poetic about Florent's place in history. The main reason for its closing was the sudden rise in the rent from about $6,000/month to $30,000 a month. And as sad as that is, founder Florent Morellet has accepted that the time is indeed over. He is spending each week of this month dedicated to the 5 stages of loss: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, for each one having a special party, going out with a bang instead of fading into obscurity.
